President Donald Trump called COVID-19 a hoax and refused to routinely wear a face mask and now he is sick. The pandemic is real and does not discriminate.
But it’s the brave and tireless frontline medical workers such as doctors and nurses who are exposed to the coronavirus everyday while saving lives like that of Trump that need high-grade reliable PPE more than ever.
Right now groups like us and other private importers are doing all they can to expedite deliveries to meet the needs of medical workers but it takes time to get products into America from overseas.
That’s right, America depends on outside manufacturers because our production capacity is simply not sufficient. Nearly all of our PPE are made outside the US and we explained the detail in our last piece here.
So how long does it take to get PPE into America from a big PPE supplier like China at the moment? (China is responsible for making most of the world’s and America’s PPE products).
Our medical insider tells us currently for goods out of China the average number of days by sea is 39 days, that is 39 days for goods to move from their manufacturer to your reception. Sea freight is the main transport mode as many flights out have been grounded since the pandemic started earlier this year.
For comparison, it would have taken an average of about 10 days if goods were transported by air.
Bear in mind however deliveries can be delayed further if the vetting of imported products fails US standards. There have been a fair number of fake products from China so US audits need to be more rigorous.
So when you’re making your next order, make sure you put in a buffer of a few extra days so you’re not caught out.
Remember, America is still running short of PPE especially masks and gloves. Our piece last week has the details.
